2017 Haskell's 100

For over 47 years, Jack Farrell has traveled the world selecting wines for Haskell's and offering his recommendations for the people of Minnesota and the surrounding Midwest.  We are pleased to announce the 2nd annual release of the Haskell's Hundred List!  We know you will be as excited about these selections as we are.

From the desk of Jack Farrell:

2017 has been another great year for wine here at Haskell's. Based on the wines that I have seen and tasted this year, I can tell you that the consumer has never had as many quality wines to choose from as we do today (and at such affordable prices)! This year, I have put together a list of my Haskell's Hundred, my favorite 100 wines that retail under $100. I have selected these wine recommendations based on their quality, availability and of course, their value. I guarantee that these wines will not disappoint!

  1. Louis Latour Marsannay 2008

Marsannay is the village which marks the northern gateway to the Côte d'Or on leaving Dijon, the capital of Burgundy and home to the Ducs de Bourgogne. This village marks the beginning of the Route des Grands Crus which follows the N6 highway through the Côte d'Or.  Marsannay received its Appellation Contrôlée designation in 1987 in recognition of the consistently high quality of its wine. Showing a pretty ruby red color, this Marsannay reveals a savory nose of red fruits. It is structured and elegant. "This was and is my go-to, every day wine for 2017!"  – Jack Farrell

  1. Roberts & Rogers Napa Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

The 2013 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is an outstanding blend of Napa Valley fruit. Primarily sourced from the Louer Family Vineyard - Ehlers Lane Estate, we've blended a selection of fruit from surrounding Napa vineyards to create an outstanding cabernet with layers of complexity. A splash of Merlot (10%) is added to create bold flavors of dark cherries along with blueberries & spiced plums. The palate is layered with well structured tannins from 15 months of French Oak. "A superb example of rich, spicy Cabernet from our dear friends at Roberts & Rogers." – Jack Farrell

  1. Tobias Formation 2014

Upon opening, ripe cherry juice and hints of understated oak race out of the glass. This wine has a gem like deep blackberry color with hints of toasted vanilla, black cherry and pipe tobacco upon tasting. This is a big bodied wine that maintains a soft, round mouth feel showing the true balance of the 85% Alexander Valley Cabernet and 15% Sangiovese. This is a killer winning blend that will leave you wanting more! Using 50% new French oak creates a subtle scent and flavor, with hints of well integrated wood amongst the more defined, richer aspects in the nose. "Yet another fantastic wine from Toby Forman, who is closely following in his father's very successful footsteps." – Jack Farrell

  1. Newton Unfiltered Chardonnay 2014

Intense, focused and complex. Pink grapefruit, fresh fig and pear aromas are enhanced by elements of spice and vanilla, contributing additional depth and intrigue. Flavors of lemon curd, marzipan and white peach evolve in the mouth, enlivened by beautifully balanced natural acidity. Enjoy this wine by itself of with a range of cuisines. The wine's rich texture and flavor pair wonderfully with rich seafood like lobster, crab and salmon and it's equally compatible with poultry, mushrooms and pork. "One of the best American Chardonnays that I have tasted in a long time.  This wine rivals some of Burgundy's top producers!" –  Jack Farrell

  1. Savigny Les Beaune Premier Cru Hospices de Beaune Cuvée Fouquerand 2014

This has a captivating floral complexity, featuring violets in the nose. This Burgundy is wonderfully balanced and the palate features soft flavors of strawberry and cherries with a pleasant lingering finish. "Drinking great out of the bottle, pair this with roast chicken, game, or wild mushroom risotto.  This is a wonderfully elegant wine for any holiday occasion." – Jack Farrell
